Emily Dickinson: Selected Poems (Park Lane Masters of Poetry)
Published in Paperback by Park Lane (May, 1996)
Author: Emily Dickinson
Average review score:

A prism which captures the white light of reality
Just as a prism breaks up light into a band of colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet - and their infinite gradations, so do Emily Dickinson's poems become, as it were, a prism which captures the white light of reality, a reality which as it flows through the prism of her poem explodes into a multiplicity of meanings.

It is the rich suggestiveness of her poems, a suggestiveness which generates an incredible range of meanings, that prevents us from ever being able to say (to continue the metaphor) that a given poem is 'about red' or 'about blue,' because her poems, as US critic Robert Weisbuch has observed, are in fact about _everything_. This is what makes her so unique, and this is why she appeals to every kind of reader (or certainly to open-minded ones) and even to children.

Emily Dickinson's poetry is one of the wonders of the world.

Encounters (Eriandos Library, No 13)
Published in Paperback by Marsilio Pub (June, 1989)
Authors: Juan Garcia Ponce, Helen Lane, Juan Garcia Pounce, and Juan Garcia-Ponce
Average review score:

Encuentros
This book contains three short-stories that are considered among the best of mexican 20th century literature. Remember Juan Rulfo's El llano en llamas, Inés Arredondo's Underground river -río subterraneo- (she's of García Ponce's generation), Juan José Arreola, et al. El gato is the first story and, in my taste, the best. Maybe that's because i live in a building like the one described there (one of the author's best achievements is description). The plot involves a woman, a cat, and a man. That's all i can say about it but you should know there's much more to it. La plaza is a short piece on melancholy for a city remembered; a place one knew in youth and comes back a mature man. La gaviota is a beautiful piece on teenage love, Octavio Paz said that it was the first time in mexican literature that someone wrote about the subject with great quality. This is a great introduction to the mature García Ponce.

Average review score:

A Miracle for Forensic Students and Crime Writers alike
As a crime writer (First Kill, The Girl By The Lake), I'm always on the lookout for great forensic reference books. I've bought this book five years ago and it has served me well. It covers, in alphabetical order, everything from scene of crime procedures, genetic fingerprint, DNA, ballistics, to profiling, knife wounds, and on and on. If it's related to crime, it's in there. Plus, apart from definitions, there are great case examples and diagrams to help the explanations when appropriate. Whether you're a forensic student, or a budding crime writer, do yourself a favour and get this one. Worth every dollar.

Essays on Mexican Art
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (May, 1993)
Authors: Octavio Paz and Helen Lane
Average review score:

Convergence of Topics
I read this book recently upon the death of Octavio Paz. The mans mind was incredible and he was able to elucidate on such disparate themes as philosophy, religion and history. What is incredible is that he manages to tie these diverse subjects into a major topic, Mexican Art. The European influences on the major Mexican artists is indelible and Paz shows how one cannot exist without it's predecessor. He takes shots at such Mexican icons as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo for their seemingly contradictory views. This book is not easy reading and requires a base of knowledge prior to reading. One area of interest is his first person accounts with famous people. Paz does not pull any punches and is a straight shooter. The insights he provides here are excellent. The expressions he provides are eloquent and given with great detail. A trully brilliant thinker that offers his thoughts for all to share and enjoy. This book makes you question your knowledge and makes you take the leap into a new understanding of what you thought you knew. Like all provacative writers who influence, you come out the better, as a result of his insights.

The Event (Masks)
Published in Paperback by Serpent's Tail (September, 1995)
Authors: Juan Jose Saer and Helen Lane
Average review score:

Oligarchic vs. immigrant Argentina in the 19th century
THE EVENT is a first-rate ironic, even sarcastic treatment of the meeting of the two Argentinas in the second half of the 19th century, the "transparent" Argentina of the oligarchs and the "opaque" modern nation made up of European immigrants, such as the protagonist of Saer's novel. The book is a rare rendition of historical misunderstanding by one of the great Latin American narrators of our time, one who remains to be discovered in the English-speaking world

Exploring Christian Thought (Nelson's Christian Cornerstone Series)
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (May, 1996)
Authors: Tony Lane, Thomas Nelson Publishers, and A. N. S. Lane
Average review score:

Great Survey of Christian Theological Thought
This is a wonderful survey of Christian Theological Thought from ancient times to the present. Tony Lane writes in an engaging style and hits all of the high points. The various (100 or so) Theologians discussed have their ideas exemplified by short pertinent quotations. Although each discussion is, by necessity, short, I found this volume to be an invaluable reference in my own Theological studies as a way of putting into perspective various periods, issues, etc. that I was only peripherally studying.

Well worth the read!

Exposing Cults: When the Skeptical Mind Confronts the Mystical (Garland Reference Library of Social Science, Vol 890)
Published in Hardcover by Garland Pub (July, 1994)
Author: David Christopher Lane
Average review score:

Professor Lane analysis of Masters is provocative.
Shocking and stunning as usual. Legendary series by Lane is precise, honest, disturbing. Having read all his books, I can only say that I wish he was wrong. Dealing with reality is no fun. Lane's books are the standard reference for true seakers and scholars. Especially Sant Mat.

Refreshingly Authentic
In this day and age where what seems to make it in this worldis that and those people who conform to the do's and don'ts ofcorporate America, or perhaps I ought say america with a small"a", FM is a most refreshing change that renews my belief that there are still original thinkers out there making personal and important statements that are not only artistic, but personal, cultural, politically relevant, psychologically astute and desperately needed. It is hard to hold onto the hope that individuals can grow up in this world, develop and hold onto and feel good about an authentic sense of self - so kudo's to Lisa Adams for creating this book, and for those whos work appears. I am always impressed by the work of Lauren Hartman who seems to really have found a path to her authentic self - may she never lose that, and may this book inspire others to find theirs.
